Getting Started with Edmonton Transit

With both buses and LRT trains, ETS forms a network connecting key city areas. The LRT is ideal for quick trips along its two main lines, the Capital and Metro lines. Buses cover neighbourhoods and destinations not served by the train.

How Much Does It Cost?

ETS fares are affordable and flexible. Here’s a breakdown of current rates:

  • Single Ride Fare: $3.75
  • Day Pass: $10.25 (unlimited rides for one day)
  • Monthly Adult Pass: $100
  • Youth and Senior Monthly Passes: $73
  • Children who are 12 years old or younger ride for free when accompanied by a paying adult

Payment options include cash, credit or debit cards, and Arc cards. The Arc card is a reloadable smart card. You can load it with pay-as-you-go credit or monthly passes. Arc also offers daily and monthly fare caps. This means you never pay more than the maximum daily or monthly rates, no matter how often you travel.

Using the Light Rail Transit (LRT)

The LRT has 2 lines:

  1. Capital Line: connects Clareview in the northeast to Century Park in the south
  2. Metro Line: runs from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to downtown, with connections to the Capital Line

The trains are fast and reliable, making them perfect for longer trips. LRT stations are well-marked and equipped with ticket machines. Remember to keep your ticket or receipt as proof of payment.

    Riding the Bus

ETS buses are convenient ways to reach areas not served by the LRT. This is helpful for some neighbourhoods, distant shopping centres, and attractions outside the city center. Don’t worry about getting lost, though. Most stops have route maps and schedules, so you can check when the next bus arrives.

For a smoother experience, consider these tips:

    • Arrive at your stop a few minutes early
    • Signal the driver as the bus approaches
    • Have your fare ready to board quickly

    Accessibility Features on Edmonton Transit

ETS is committed to serving everyone. All buses and trains have features to support riders with mobility challenges. Buses have low floors for easy boarding, and LRT stations have elevators and ramps. Priority seating is also available for seniors and people with disabilities.

For more support, try using the Disabled Adult Transit Service (DATS). This door-to-door service is for individuals who can’t use regular buses or trains due to mobility issues.

    Tips for First-Time Riders

If you’re new to Edmonton Transit, here are some helpful tips:

    • If you’re paying cash, have the exact fare ready
    • Travel off-peak commuter hours if possible because midday and early afternoon rides are less crowded

    Safety and Etiquette

Always allow others to exit before boarding. If you are able, please offer your seat to seniors or people with disabilities. Lastly, try to keep noise to a minimum during your trip. Following these simple rules helps everyone enjoy a comfortable ride.

    Exploring Edmonton Transit

Public transit is a great way to visit Edmonton’s attractions. For example, you can take the LRT to the Royal Alberta Museum or the Art Gallery of Alberta, both located downtown. Many ETS routes also connect to West Edmonton Mall, a popular destination for shopping and entertainment.

As a Canoo member, you can use transit to visit venues, like Fort Edmonton Park. These attractions offer free or discounted entry for members, making them even more accessible.

Edmonton Transit Service makes exploring the city simple and affordable. With a mix of buses and trains and accessibility features, the ETS caters to everyone. Whether you’re commuting or sightseeing, the system is designed to meet your needs. And with the Canoo app, your trips are even more rewarding.
