Introduction: Slow Roads, Big Views

There’s something about road tripping in British Columbia that invites you to slow down. Maybe it’s the way the ocean curves along the highway, or the surprise of spotting a glacier you didn’t expect. While the usual spots—like Whistler or Kelowna—have their charm, they’re not the only options.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back weekend getaway—places where the scenery is wild, the roads are peaceful, and your phone signal might disappear for a while—these three BC road trips are for you.

1. Sunshine Coast to Lund

Estimated Time: 2 days, 1 ferry + 4-5 hrs total drive
Best for: Ocean views, artsy towns, quiet hikes

The Sunshine Coast feels like another world, but it’s surprisingly accessible from Vancouver. Start by taking the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, and then weave your way north through small coastal towns like Sechelt and Powell River until you reach Lund—the literal end of Highway 101.

What to do:

  • Walk the forested Inland Lake Trail near Powell River
  • Eat seafood with a view at the Laughing Oyster
  • Browse local art galleries and cafés in Lund

Local tip: Book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during summer weekends. If you’re camping, Saltery Bay is a great halfway stop.

2. Naramata Bench & the South Okanagan

Estimated Time: 2–3 days, ~4.5 hrs from Vancouver
Best for: Wine, lakes, and backroad charm

Skip the busyness of central Kelowna and head toward Naramata, Penticton, and Osoyoos instead. This route winds past small, family-run wineries, golden vineyards, and warm lakeside beaches perfect for slowing down.

What to do:

  • Tour the Naramata Bench wineries
  • Swim at Skaha Lake or Vaseux Lake
  • Try farm-fresh food at roadside fruit stands

Local tip: Bring a cooler—you’ll want to stock up on fruit and cheese from local markets. Lodging fills up fast in July, so book ahead or consider a cozy Airbnb in Summerland.

3. Duffey Lake Road to Lillooet

Estimated Time: 2 days, ~3.5 hrs from Vancouver via Whistler
Best for: Mountains, waterfalls, and stunning silence

Beyond Whistler, the road narrows, the cliffs rise higher, and the traffic thins out. Duffey Lake Road (Highway 99) is one of the most beautiful drives in BC. The journey from Pemberton to Lillooet feels raw and dramatic—with glacier lakes, winding mountain passes, and barely any cellphone reception.

What to do:

  • Stop at Joffre Lakes or Duffey Lake viewpoints
  • Visit Fort Berens winery in Lillooet
  • Stay overnight in a rustic lodge or riverside motel

Local tip: Download your map offline and pack snacks—the stretch between Pemberton and Lillooet is short on services but big on views.
