About Music Toronto

Music Toronto has deep roots in the city’s cultural landscape. Starting as the music program of Toronto Arts Productions, they offered a full schedule of chamber music concerts and recitals at what is now the Jane Mallett Theatre in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. From the very first season in 1971, the series earned a reputation for presenting performances of exceptional quality while resonating with audiences.

Through the 1970s and 1980s, Music Toronto brought world-renowned ensembles and soloists to Toronto, often introducing the city to international talent for the first time. In 1983, the series was renamed CentreStage Music, expanding its focus to highlight established Canadian performers and nurture emerging artists. By 1987, the program evolved into Music Toronto, establishing itself as an organization committed to live music in the city.

Since 1989, the artistic vision has continued to grow under leaders like Chris Wilcox, an advisory committee, Jennifer Taylor, and now Artistic & Executive Director Roman Borys. All of whom work towards a shared focus on artistic excellence and innovation, presenting both Canadian and international talent.

Today, Music Toronto combines this rich history with a fresh perspective, creating intimate, high-quality performances that connect artists and audiences in meaningful ways. Over the years, it has developed a reputation for presenting performances that are both intimate and inspiring, allowing audiences to feel genuinely connected to the music and the musicians.

What sets Music Toronto apart is not just the quality of the performances but the sense of community it fosters. Every concert is an invitation to experience music in a way that feels personal and approachable, whether you’re attending a sold-out season show or discovering a hidden gem on a spontaneous Tuesday night.
