Vancouver Parent’s Favourite Guide for Free Things to do on the Weekend

Vancouver is a perfect playground for families. From the mountains to the harbourfront, downtown Vancouver has so many places to take your kids.

Get experimental at Science World. On rare sunny days, head to Stanley Park for the afternoon. But, when it’s rainy (as usual), get out of this world! Visit the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, where kids fulfill their dreams of becoming astronauts.

How can you do this and still save money as a parent? Canoo can take you on all these adventures for free! In your 1st year of membership, you can get free admission to Canoo partners in Canada. And our top spots for kids are listed below!

  1. Science World
  2. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
  3. Canadian Museum of Flight
  4. Museum of Vancouver

Science World

Free entry with Canoo!

Science World’s iconic dome wants you to explore interactive exhibits and live demonstrations! Don’t forget about the immersive films at the OMNIMAX Theatre.

Ever wondered about the world of physics? Or want to see the incredible strength of the human body? Find your answers to these questions at Science World where every family member can find something to enjoy.

You will need at least 2 hours to wander through the exhibits, but most people spend half the day. Because the space is perfect for children! Science World offers hands-on activities that get your kids excited while encouraging you, as parents, to learn alongside them. Making learning fun.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

Step into the past at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, inspired by a garden built during the Ming Dynasty (1350-1650) in China. While Vancouver’s version appears historic, the Sun Yat-Sen Garden was only built in 1986 for the World Expo held that same year!

And who is Dr. Sun Yat-Sen? He was a political leader in China from the early 1900s. Once, he was called a revolutionary. Now, he’s considered a founding father.

Located in Vancouver’s Chinatown, this Garden is an escape from the bustling city streets. They offer guided tours that talk about Chinese culture, philosophy, and maintaining the garden. The covered walkways and intricate architecture are perfect for getting outside, especially on a rainy day.

The Chinese Garden does have a daily admission, but is free with a Canoo membership.

Museum of Vancouver

The Museum of Vancouver takes you through the city’s local history. Connected to the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, this Museum reveals what city existed here before Vancouver and the impact of Indigenous cultures on today’s Vancouver. “The Ontario Science Centre was a whirlwind of discovery for our family. The kids were mesmerized by the rainforest on Level 6 and even spotted a poison dart frog. The interactive displays were fantastic. It was a day well spent. And, thanks to Canoo’s unlimited free entries during the first year of our membership, we can’t wait to explore more of the Science Centre and other places in Toronto!”

“The Royal Ontario Museum was a treasure trove for our family! It’s like a journey through time and nature all at once. My son, a dino fanatic, was speechless seeing real dinosaur skeletons! We explored ancient artifacts, stunning artwork, and even marine creatures – all under one roof. We discovered this gem thanks to Canoo and can’t wait to explore more!”
