Kim’s Convenience is an ode to the challenges and successes that many immigrants face as they build their lives in Canada. The popular TV show was a fan favourite while it aired and continues to be a constant comfort for new and longtime fans. But, did you know the TV show was based on a play? Creator, Ins Choi, did not realize the initial success of the play would lead to the development of a beloved show. Lasting for 5 seasons, stars like Simu Liu, Andrea Bang, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Jean Yoon bring you into the Kim family.
Canoo welcomed members to the opening night of the play at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. The play continues its run until November 4, 2023. Download the app and, if you are eligible, you can get discounted tickets for any seat in the theatre and enjoy a wonderful night in downtown London.
From Stage to Screen with Kim’s Convenience
In 2011, Kim’s Convenience debuted at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Set in a convenience store in Toronto’s Regent Park, the story revolves around the Kim family. As immigrants from South Korea raising their children in Canada, their store, customers, and community all play a vital role in their family. The play not only offers humour, but also dives into themes of family, cultural identity, and the immigrant experience. This resonates with audiences from many different backgrounds.
“This play is a love letter to my appa and umma and to all first-generation immigrants who call Canada home.”
Ins Choi, Creator of Kim’s Convenience
In 2016, CBC adapted the play into a television series. The show maintained the core elements that made the play so special, including its focus on family dynamics and cultural humour. It also managed to bring the characters to life in a new and exciting way, thanks to the talented cast.
Kim’s Convenience has been celebrated for its positive portrayal of Korean-Canadian culture and the stories that many first-generation immigrants relate to. It addressed the challenges and triumphs of a family trying to bridge the gap between their Korean heritage and their new life in Canada. The show has also sparked important conversations about representation in the media and the need for more diverse and authentic stories.
Taking Canoo to the Theatre
Celebrating this event with Canoo and the Grand Theatre, we were able to see Canoo members using the app and experiencing what we offer in their community. Meeting members and hearing their stories in such a setting was empowering and emotional because they share in the wins and losses that faced the Kim family.
“Tonight, we get to experience Canada at its best: both on-stage and off. We’re here to celebrate a story about immigrants running a literal “Mom and Pop shop” in a place they are making their own, but, working to overcome the societal and family challenges that come with that. And, we’re here to celebrate all of you, who are doing the same thing, only perhaps, without your own TV show … yet.”
Salimah Dhalla, Senior Director of Strategy and Operations at the Institute for Canadian Citizenship
