Merrickville

Just a 1-hour drive from Ottawa, Merrickville is also called the “Jewel of the Rideau.” Narcity even named them the most beautiful village in Canada! This pretty village located along the Rideau Canal has a vibrant arts scene and beautifully preserved historic architecture. Wander along the canal and explore the quaint shops and galleries that line the streets. Don’t miss a visit to the Merrickville Blockhouse, which offers a glimpse into the town’s military past. For a relaxing lunch, try one of the cafes or bistros that offer charming atmospheres and delicious, locally sourced food.

Almonte

Almonte is just 30 minutes from Ottawa and has a perfect blend of historical charm and natural beauty. It’s known for its 19th-century architecture and its location on the Mississippi River (the Canadian and less famous Mississippi River). After strolling through the town, take a walk on the 3-kilometre Almonte Riverwalk to enjoy the river views and town landmarks. On the drive to Almonte, make a short detour to visit the Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum, which you can visit for free or at a discount with your Canoo pass.

Carlton Place

Like Almonte, Carlton Place is also located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town is known for its beautiful riverside parks and outdoor activities. There are two public beaches where you can cool off on a warm day. You can also visit local boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. If you like history, consider visiting some of the town’s historic buildings, like The Heritage Museum – over the last 150 years, this building has been a town hall, a jail, and a school.

Perth

Perth is another gem located about an hour from Ottawa. This historic town is renowned for its pretty architecture and limestone buildings. Stroll through the downtown area to admire the historic homes and landmarks. Perth also offers a great cultural scene with lots of festivals, art galleries, and theaters. For a taste of local flavour, visit one of the town’s many charming restaurants or farmers’ markets, where you can sample fresh, local produce. For nature lovers, Perth is just a 15-minute drive away from Murphys Point Provincial Park.

Manotick

Manotick is a suburban area just south of Ottawa where you can enjoy many outdoor activities. This may not sound as incredible as the other towns listed above. But cyclists can ride along the Rideau River Heritage Trail, and families can check out Watson’s Mill, a historic mill with walking trails and picnic spots nearby. Or grab lunch at The Miller’s Oven, a local restaurant run by a volunteer group of seniors.

Each of these small towns offers its own distinct experience, making them perfect for a day trip from Ottawa. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or simply a relaxing change of pace, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you.

So pack a picnic, grab your camera, and set off to discover the charm of these nearby gems.
